Two representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement are expected to meet a senior federal minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet after weeks of nationwide protests over examination paper leaks and rising youth unemployment.
The planned meeting was confirmed by CJP spokesperson Saurav Das, who shared the update on social media platform X. According to Das, government officials contacted the movement earlier on Monday to arrange the talks, marking one of the first direct engagements between the administration and the protest group.
“The government reached out to us this morning for discussions,” Das said, adding that the movement would participate in the meeting while maintaining its core demands.
The announcement came as tensions remained high in New Delhi on the opening day of Parliament’s monsoon session. Earlier, police clashed with demonstrators after hundreds of protesters attempted to march toward Parliament despite restrictions imposed by authorities. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, blaming the government for repeated examination paper leaks and inadequate action against those responsible.
The Cockroach Janta Party movement began as a satirical campaign criticizing official comments about unemployed youth. However, it has since grown into a broader nationwide movement attracting large numbers of young people frustrated over unemployment, recruitment delays, and concerns about transparency in public examinations.
Public anger intensified after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been observing a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, was moved to a hospital by police over the weekend. The incident further fueled criticism of the government’s handling of ongoing demonstrations.
Despite the government’s willingness to hold talks, CJP leaders say their position remains unchanged. Saurav Das emphasized that the movement’s demands are clear and continue to receive widespread support from young people across the country.
The upcoming meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the protesters’ concerns, although it remains unclear whether the talks will lead to any immediate policy decisions or concessions from the government.
