The Punjab Prisons Department has introduced mandatory health and psychological screening for all prison employees across the province. The new policy aims to improve the physical and mental well-being of staff working in prisons. Officials say the decision comes after concerns about health problems linked to long working hours and continuous duty.
Inspector General of Prisons Punjab, Mian Salik Jalal, issued the directive through an official circular. Under the new instructions, health screening for employees will begin this week in prisons across Punjab, including Lahore.
The Punjab Prisons Department has directed every jail to organize a health screening camp every three months. These regular camps will help monitor the health of officers and employees throughout the year.
The policy also makes annual medical examinations compulsory for all prison staff. These checkups will include blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight, and other basic health indicators. The goal is to identify health issues at an early stage and provide timely medical care.
The circular also places strong focus on mental health. Employees dealing with depression, anxiety, or stress will receive free psychological counselling. Officials believe mental health support is essential because prison employees often work under pressure for long hours.
To further improve well-being, prison authorities have been instructed to introduce exercise sessions, sports activities, and meditation programs. These activities are expected to help employees manage stress and maintain better physical fitness.
The new guidelines also include emergency medical procedures. If any employee experiences symptoms such as severe headaches, dizziness, chest pain, or other warning signs, they must be taken to a hospital immediately for treatment.
Another important part of the policy is the creation of confidential health records. Every prison will prepare a private health file for each officer and employee after completing physical and psychological assessments. These records will help track employees’ health over time while maintaining confidentiality.
The circular also encourages healthier daily habits. Staff members have been advised to avoid smoking, eat a balanced diet, and make regular exercise part of their routine. Officials believe these lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of long-term illnesses.
According to prison authorities, many employees work continuous 24-hour duty shifts. This demanding schedule has increased the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease among staff. The new health measures are intended to reduce these risks and improve workplace well-being.
