Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni praised his team’s determination and resilience after they staged a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup final.
Speaking after Wednesday’s thrilling semi-final, Scaloni said his players showed tremendous character by refusing to give up after falling behind. He explained that Argentina sensed an opportunity once England began defending deeper following their opening goal.
“I think that this team plays the best when we are facing adversity,” Scaloni told reporters after the match. “We had a challenging game, a challenging situation.”
The coach said Argentina continued creating chances despite several missed opportunities and never allowed frustration to affect their performance. According to Scaloni, his side believed the breakthrough would eventually come if they maintained their attacking intensity.
“There was blood in the water, and we went for it. That’s the feeling that I was getting,” he said.
“We hit the crossbar. We hit the post, and it just couldn’t go in. There were six or seven chances, but I’m very pleased because the team fought to the very end, and I think this is critical.”
The victory marked Argentina’s second remarkable comeback during the knockout stages. Earlier in the tournament, the South American champions also recovered from a deficit to eliminate Egypt in the Round of 16.
When reminded that he had previously described that comeback as “epic,” Scaloni smiled and jokingly called the latest victory “epic squared.”
The Argentine coach credited the entire squad for their unity, teamwork and relentless mentality, saying those qualities have become the foundation of the team’s recent success.
“This group is difficult to explain. It is a show of the collectiveness, the brotherhood that we are in, the fight to the very end that we have,” he said.
Argentina will now face European champions Spain in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Victory would hand Scaloni his fourth consecutive major international title after leading Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América triumphs.
Despite the pressure of another major final, Scaloni insisted his players remain fearless and approach every match with the same confidence.
“I know the guys. They fear nothing,” he said.
“They’re playing like they’re seven or eight years old. They’re not thinking about what happens if they miss. They’re not thinking about the semifinal or the final.”
