A tragic roof collapse at a private school in Lahore’s Baghbanpura area has claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy and left four construction workers seriously injured. The incident occurred during a summer camp while construction work was underway to expand the school building, raising fresh concerns over safety measures at educational institutions carrying out building work in the presence of children.
According to rescue officials, emergency teams rushed to the scene immediately after receiving reports of the collapse. Rescue personnel launched an operation to remove those trapped beneath the rubble and shifted the victims to a nearby hospital. Doctors later confirmed the death of 10-year-old Abu Bakr, while the four injured construction workers were admitted for treatment and remain under medical care.
Authorities said the accident happened when the roof suddenly gave way during ongoing construction work. Heavy debris fell without warning, creating panic among students and staff present at the school. A summer camp was in progress at the time, with a large number of children inside the premises. Fortunately, all other children attending the camp managed to escape safely, preventing an even greater tragedy.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over construction safety standards and the practice of carrying out structural work while educational activities continue. Parents and local residents have questioned whether adequate safety precautions were in place and have called for stricter oversight of construction projects at schools to protect students and staff.
The latest tragedy comes only days after the devastating Kahna tuition centre roof collapse, where repair and construction work reportedly weakened the building’s structure. Investigators said excessive weight placed on the roof caused iron T-R girders to fail, leading to the collapse that claimed the lives of 14 children. A total of 35 students were inside the tuition centre when the incident occurred, making it one of the deadliest structural accidents involving children in recent years.
With two major roof-collapse incidents occurring within a short period, public concern over building safety has intensified across Punjab. Citizens are urging authorities to conduct comprehensive inspections of schools, tuition centres, and other educational institutions, enforce stricter construction regulations, and hold those responsible accountable. The latest incident is expected to strengthen calls for improved safety standards to prevent similar tragedies and protect the lives of students.
