Transport and engineering experts have proposed the construction of two underground railway corridors in Karachi to improve the city’s transport network. The recommendation was presented during the 40th Symposium of the Pakistan Academy of Engineering (PAE). The event focused on the importance of underground mobility in large and rapidly growing cities.
The symposium brought together experts from Pakistan, the United States, and China. Participants studied successful underground railway systems operating in cities such as Singapore, New York, Washington DC, Delhi, Friedberg, and Dhaka. These examples were reviewed to understand how underground rail networks can solve traffic problems in major urban areas.
After detailed discussions, the participants unanimously recommended two underground railway routes for Karachi. The first proposed corridor would connect Numaish Chowrangi with Merewether Tower. The second route would run from FTC on Sharea Faisal to I.I. Chundrigar Road and Tower.
According to the experts, these corridors would improve connectivity between important business centers and residential neighborhoods. The project could also reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters while easing pressure on busy roads.
PAE President Prof. Dr. Brigadier (Retired) Nasim Akhtar Khan said Karachi needs long-term transport planning because of its rapidly increasing population. He explained that underground railway systems offer a sustainable solution for meeting future transportation demands. He added that planning for modern infrastructure today will help support the city’s continued growth.
The academy believes the proposed underground railway should work alongside Karachi’s existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Combining both services would create a stronger and more efficient public transport network. This integrated system would be able to serve significantly more passengers than the current network alone.
Experts also highlighted several benefits of the proposed railway project. They said it could reduce traffic congestion, improve travel between commercial and residential areas, and lower pollution levels across the city. The underground system could also provide a safer, faster, and more reliable travel option for millions of people.
The proposal is expected to support economic activity by making it easier for people to reach workplaces, businesses, and public facilities. Better transport connections could also encourage more residents to choose public transport instead of private vehicles.

Although the recommendation has received support from transport specialists, no official construction timeline has been announced. The proposal is expected to play an important role in future discussions on expanding Karachi’s transport infrastructure and developing a more modern, sustainable public transportation system.
