Pakistan is observing Ashura with deep religious devotion to remember the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his loyal companions who embraced martyrdom in the Battle of Karbala. Across the country, millions of mourners are participating in processions and religious gatherings to pay tribute to the martyrs and reflect on the timeless lessons of faith, patience, sacrifice, and justice that continue to inspire generations.
Major cities including Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Sukkur, and Hyderabad are witnessing large Ashura processions and majalis attended by thousands of devotees. Religious scholars are addressing gatherings, emphasizing the significance of Imam Hussain’s (RA) stand against oppression and highlighting the enduring message of Karbala for the Muslim Ummah.
To ensure peaceful Ashura observances, authorities have implemented comprehensive security arrangements across Pakistan. Roads along procession routes have been closed to unnecessary traffic, additional security checkpoints have been established, and surveillance has been strengthened. In several sensitive areas, mobile phone and internet services have been partially suspended, while Section 144 remains in force, prohibiting the public display of weapons and other activities that could disrupt law and order.
Law enforcement agencies have deployed heavy contingents of police and security personnel nationwide. In Punjab alone, more than 100,000 officers and officials have been assigned to safeguard Ashura processions and religious gatherings, according to the provincial police chief.
Karachi’s main procession began from Nishtar Park and is scheduled to conclude at Hussainia Iraniyan Imambargah in Kharadar after following its traditional route. In Lahore, the central Zuljanah procession departed from Nisar Haveli and will end at Karbala Gamay Shah, with thousands of mourners taking part. Similar central processions are underway in Rawalpindi, while Peshawar is hosting multiple mourning processions under strict security.
In Quetta, the main procession started from Imambargah Hussaini Sadat on Alamdar Road, with dozens of Zuljanah groups, tazias, and religious standards participating. Volunteers have arranged water stalls, refreshment camps, and emergency medical services for mourners throughout the route.
Authorities have also enforced restrictions on motorcycle pillion riding in several areas to strengthen Ashura security. After the completion of the processions, Sham-e-Ghariban gatherings will be held to remember the events that followed the tragedy of Karbala. Meanwhile, the president, prime minister, interior minister, provincial chief ministers, and senior police officials have directed all relevant departments to maintain strict vigilance and ensure the peaceful completion of Ashura commemorations across the country.
