The federal government is moving forward with efforts to address concerns surrounding the proposed Telecom Reorganization Amendment Bill. A review committee is expected to submit its recommendations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after examining legal and technical objections raised by stakeholders.
Speaking to reporters at Parliament House, ITMinister Shaza Fatima said the government had formed a special committee to review the disputed aspects of the proposed legislation. The committee is headed by the law minister and includes legal experts, independent members, and representatives from the telecom industry.
According to the ITMinister, the review panel has been tasked with studying concerns raised by different stakeholders. The committee will attempt to resolve contentious issues before forwarding its final recommendations to the prime minister.
The government hopes the review process will help create consensus on the proposed amendments. Officials believe that addressing objections through consultation can strengthen the legislative process and improve confidence among stakeholders.
Responding to criticism, the ITMinister rejected claims that the government rushed the bill through parliament. She said the proposed amendments had remained under discussion in the National Assembly for nearly six months. The legislation was also reviewed by the Senate Standing Committee during the consultation process.
Shaza Fatima said the government remains focused on launching 5G services as early as possible. She stressed that modern telecom infrastructure is necessary for the successful deployment of next-generation mobile networks.
The ITMinister highlighted the importance of fiberization across the country. According to her, expanding fiber-optic networks is essential for improving internet performance. She warned that consumers could continue facing poor internet services if adequate fiber infrastructure is not developed before the arrival of 5G.
The government believes that improved infrastructure will support faster internet speeds and enhance digital connectivity. It is also expected to help businesses and consumers benefit from advanced technologies.
The ITMinister further emphasized the need to maintain investor confidence in Pakistan’s telecom sector. She said a stable regulatory environment is important for attracting investment and supporting infrastructure development.
At the same time, she clarified that measures aimed at encouraging investment would not affect constitutional rights, privacy protections, or private property. The government remains committed to balancing technological progress with legal safeguards.
