A moderate earthquake was felt across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and several areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday afternoon, causing concern among residents and prompting many people to move out of buildings as a precaution.
According to reports, the earthquake was experienced in multiple districts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Attock, and Chakwal. Residents in Faisalabad and surrounding regions also reported noticeable shaking. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, tremors were felt in Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and nearby areas, where people briefly left their homes and workplaces due to safety concerns.
Witnesses said the shaking was strong enough to move furniture and other household items. As soon as the tremors began, many people rushed outside homes, offices, shopping centres, and other buildings. Open spaces quickly filled with residents who feared possible aftershocks following the initial seismic activity.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) later confirmed that the earthquake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale. According to the department, the epicentre was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, an area known for frequent seismic activity that often affects Pakistan and neighbouring countries.
PMD officials stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 215 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface. Experts explained that deep-focus earthquakes can be felt over a much wider area, which is why tremors were experienced in several cities and districts simultaneously.
Despite the widespread impact, no immediate reports of deaths, injuries, or major structural damage were received. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and monitor any developments related to the seismic event.
Residents have been advised to remain alert and follow official safety guidelines in case of further tremors. Emergency officials also urged the public to avoid panic and stay informed through reliable sources as monitoring of the earthquake situation continues.
