Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning residents to prepare for extremely high temperatures expected from June 8 to June 11.
According to the authority, a strong heatwave is likely to affect most parts of the province, with temperatures forecast to remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal levels. Officials have urged citizens to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
The heatwave is expected to be particularly severe in the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Areas including Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, and Karak may experience temperatures reaching up to 46°C during the warning period.
Other major districts are also expected to face intense weather conditions. In Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, and Haripur, temperatures could rise to around 45°C, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
To deal with the expected heatwave, the PDMA has instructed local administrations and relevant departments to establish heatstroke prevention centers and cooling facilities in vulnerable locations. These measures are aimed at providing immediate assistance to people affected by extreme temperatures.
Emergency services have also been placed on alert. Rescue 1122 teams and fire brigade departments have been directed to remain fully prepared to respond to any incidents related to the heatwave.
The authority warned that the intense weather conditions may also trigger dust storms and strong winds in various parts of the province. In addition, prolonged dry weather could put extra pressure on water resources and reservoirs.
Officials further noted that rising temperatures may speed up snowmelt in northern mountainous areas, potentially affecting water flow patterns.
The public has been strongly advised to limit outdoor activities during peak daytime hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight. Authorities say following safety guidelines can help reduce the risks associated with the ongoing heatwave and protect public health.
