NEPRA Approves Rs1.19 Per Unit Increase in Electricity

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an increase of Rs1.19 per unit in electricity tariffs under the fuel price adjustment mechanism for April 2026. The regulator has also issued an official notification confirming the revised charges, which will be recovered from consumers through upcoming electricity bills.

According to the notification, electricity users across the country will pay an additional Rs1.19 per unit. The adjustment will primarily be reflected in June 2026 electricity bills and will apply to consumers served by both K-Electric and the former WAPDA distribution companies (DISCOs).

NEPRA explained that the national average fuel charge component had been set at Rs8.2 per unit. However, the actual fuel cost recorded during April 2026 reached Rs9.4 per unit. The difference between the projected and actual fuel costs resulted in a fuel price adjustment of Rs1.19 per unit, which has now been approved for recovery from consumers.

The regulator clarified that the additional charge will not apply to lifeline consumers, who are protected from such adjustments. Likewise, prepaid electricity consumers and electric vehicle charging stations have been exempted from the latest increase, providing relief to these categories of users.

The notification further stated that the fuel adjustment will also apply to electricity consumed under the incremental consumption package. The calculation of the surcharge will be based on units consumed during April 2026, ensuring that the adjustment reflects actual electricity usage during that month.

NEPRA added that the recovery of the approved charges will take place during the current billing cycle. In cases where June electricity bills have already been issued, the adjustment amount will instead be included in subsequent bills. The latest increase is expected to add further pressure on household and business electricity expenses amid ongoing concerns over rising energy costs in the country.
