The federal government is considering significant changes to the electricity tariff structure for industrial consumers as part of efforts to strengthen the national power system and increase reliance on the grid. The proposed policy would introduce a different pricing mechanism that could result in higher fixed charges for industries with lower electricity consumption while offering incentives to larger consumers.
According to reports, the proposed electricity plan is designed to encourage industries to remain connected to the national grid instead of shifting toward alternative energy sources such as solar power. Officials believe that increasing grid usage is necessary to ensure the sustainability of the country’s power infrastructure and recover operational costs.
Under the proposed framework, industries that consume relatively small amounts of electricity may be required to pay higher fixed charges. In contrast, businesses with greater electricity consumption could benefit from reduced per-unit rates, making power costs more affordable for large-scale industrial operations. Reports suggest that industrial electricity tariffs under the new policy could range between 6 and 8 cents per unit.
The Power Division has reportedly informed stakeholders that the new electricity tariff model could be introduced within the next two months. The proposal has also been discussed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has sought details regarding electricity consumption trends and the number of industries disconnecting from the national grid.
At the initial stage, the revised electricity pricing mechanism will apply only to industrial consumers. However, authorities have indicated that similar measures could eventually be expanded to commercial establishments and residential consumers in the future.
Government officials estimate that the new electricity policy may increase demand on the national grid by up to 1,000 megawatts. They argue that the initiative is necessary to maintain the financial viability of the electricity sector and encourage continued dependence on the national power network. The proposal remains under consideration, and further details are expected once the government finalizes its decision on the revised electricity tariff structure.
