A raid conducted by Federal Investigation Agency officials at a jeweler’s shop in Sarafa Bazaar Saddar Karachi has sparked strong criticism and anger among local traders and shopkeepers.
According to members of the traders’ community, FIA officials allegedly behaved aggressively during the operation and treated shop staff disrespectfully. Traders claimed that investigators verbally abused employees and used physical force while carrying out the raid.
One allegation that triggered major outrage among traders was the claim that a shopkeeper was allegedly slapped in front of his young son after questioning the officials during the operation.
Local traders stated that while law enforcement agencies have the legal authority to conduct raids and inspections, such actions should be carried out professionally without humiliating or intimidating citizens publicly.
The business community strongly condemned the incident and argued that public officials, whose salaries are funded through taxpayers’ money, should treat citizens respectfully instead of creating fear and harassment. Traders also demanded immediate action from senior authorities, including the Interior Minister, to ensure accountability over the incident.
Meanwhile, an FIA spokesperson confirmed that the raid had been conducted based on credible intelligence reports regarding the alleged presence of smuggled silver inside the jeweler’s shop. According to the agency, some traders allegedly attempted to hide the suspected silver during the operation amid the confusion.
However, traders rejected the FIA’s claims and insisted that they possess video evidence showing the silver being taken out of a locker voluntarily for inspection. They argued that the footage supports their version of events and contradicts the allegations made by officials.
The incident created tension and unrest among traders in the area, many of whom expressed concern over the conduct of the officials involved in the operation.
Following the controversy, FIA Director General Dr. Usman Anwar ordered a formal inquiry into the matter. He directed the FIA Karachi Zone director to carry out a detailed investigation and submit a complete report within 48 hours.
