Punjab Plans Major Revision to School Curriculum System

The Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority has launched a major curriculum reform initiative for grades I to V, aiming to transform primary education by shifting focus from rote memorization to concept-based and conceptual learning.

This development was shared during the first meeting of PECTAA’s Curriculum Advisory Committee, where members reviewed the existing primary education framework and began outlining a comprehensive reform strategy.

According to the authority, the initial phase of reforms will concentrate on early primary grades. The committee has been assigned the task of reviewing Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) with the objective of reducing unnecessary content, eliminating repetition, and ensuring alignment with core conceptual understanding.

PECTAA stated that the overall goal of the reform is to move away from traditional content-heavy teaching methods and instead encourage critical thinking, deeper understanding, and improved adaptability among students. The current primary curriculum has long faced criticism for relying heavily on memorization, which is seen as limiting both teaching effectiveness and student learning development.

Under the new plan, the revised curriculum framework will be streamlined and brought in line with international education standards. The authority also emphasized that the updated system will aim to improve classroom learning by making teaching more practical and engaging.

In addition, teachers will be provided with greater flexibility and professional support to enhance their instructional methods. This is expected to improve the overall learning environment and help educators better deliver concept-based education.

Through these reforms, PECTAA aims to modernize early education in Punjab, ensuring that students develop stronger analytical skills and a deeper understanding of subjects from the beginning of their academic journey.
