Pakistan Kissan Ittehad Warns of Protests Over Wheat Losses and Demands Reform

The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad has warned the government of nationwide protests if farmers’ demands are not addressed within three days. The warning was issued by President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar during a press conference.

He said the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad represents farmers who are facing serious financial losses. He urged the government to take immediate steps to resolve the ongoing wheat crisis.

Khokhar claimed that farmers have suffered losses of around Rs. 2,200 billion in the last two years. He said this situation is the result of poor policies, low wheat prices, and weak administrative decisions.

He demanded the formation of an independent commission to investigate the wheat sector. He suggested that the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly should head this commission. He said it should review the last three years in detail.

The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad leader criticized the current wheat pricing system. He said the production cost in August 2024 was Rs. 3,410 per maund. However, wheat was sold at Rs. 2,700 per maund. He added that prices dropped further to Rs. 2,200 in 2025.

He also raised concerns about the minimum support price mechanism. According to him, private companies selected by the government had not procured wheat as of April 24. He called this situation alarming for farmers.

Khokhar also demanded the abolition of the Price Control Department. He said the department has failed to support farmers and has instead created more problems.

The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad president further criticized previous wheat import decisions made in 2023. He said those decisions are still affecting local farmers today.

He also pointed out that the Electronic Warehouse Receipt system has not been properly implemented. According to him, this has reduced financial support options for farmers.

He rejected government claims about providing free gunny bags. He said such packaging costs are normally paid by buyers, not farmers.

Khokhar warned that if the government does not respond within three days, the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad will begin protests across the country. He said farmers are left with no other option due to continuous losses.
