Rawalpindi and Islamabad have once again come under a strict shutdown, as authorities imposed heightened security measures across key areas, leading to widespread closures and restricted activity.
Officials in the garrison city ordered the immediate shutdown of cafés, restaurants, gyms, markets, and marriage halls just hours before anticipated high-level developments. The sudden enforcement resulted in unusually quiet streets, while residents and business owners were left trying to understand the abrupt situation.
According to directives issued by the Station House Officer (SHO) of New Town Police Station, the shutdown came into effect from midnight on April 18, 2026, and will continue indefinitely until further notice. No clear timeline has been provided for when normal activities will resume, adding to uncertainty among the public.
As part of the shutdown, restaurants, hotels, cafés—including Quetta-style establishments—and bakeries were ordered to close. Public spaces such as parks, beauty salons, gyms, and snooker clubs were also shut down. In addition, all general markets, barber shops, pan stalls, and roadside kiosks were directed to cease operations completely.
The shutdown has also impacted social life, with marriage halls and banquet venues closed, forcing the suspension of weddings and other gatherings. This reflects the scale and seriousness of the restrictions imposed.
Authorities stated that the shutdown is part of special law and order arrangements in response to rising security concerns in the region. Officials have issued a strict warning, making it clear that any violation of the shutdown orders will result in firm legal action, leaving business owners with no option but to comply.
