The Government of Punjab has decided to expand and extend its solar panel initiative, offering greater relief to households amid rising energy costs. Under the latest decision, the free solar panel scheme will now continue for an additional six months, with its deadline pushed to December 2026. This extension comes on the directives of Maryam Nawaz, reflecting the government’s intent to broaden access to renewable energy across the province.
As part of the revised plan, authorities have allocated additional funds to scale up the distribution. More than 94,000 solar panel systems are expected to be installed, with the total cost of the project estimated at nearly Rs. 10 billion. The expansion aims to accommodate the overwhelming public response and ensure that a larger number of deserving households benefit from the scheme.
The solar panel units will be provided completely free of cost to low-income consumers. Selection will be carried out through a transparent balloting process, ensuring fair distribution among applicants. The program will cover all districts and tehsils of Punjab, making it one of the most extensive renewable energy initiatives in the region.
Officials have confirmed that the response has been massive, with over 800,000 applications already submitted. Originally, the solar panel scheme was scheduled to conclude in June 2026. However, due to the surge in demand and the government’s decision to expand its reach, the timeline has now been extended.
This move highlights Punjab’s growing focus on clean energy solutions while also providing financial relief to citizens. By increasing access to solar panel systems, the government aims to reduce electricity costs for households and promote sustainable energy usage across the province.
