Karachi has witnessed an unusual weather event as a strong spell of Rain broke a 41-year-old record in the city. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the city received 38.7 millimetres of rain within 24 hours. This officially surpassed the previous April record of 37 millimetres set on April 2, 1985.
The recent Rain has also caused a sharp drop in temperature across Karachi. The minimum temperature fell to 16°C, which is much lower than the usual April average of 21.8°C. Residents experienced a sudden winter-like chill, which is rare for this time of the year.
Weather officials said the current system is caused by a westerly wave moving toward the southeast. While its intensity is decreasing, its effects may continue in some parts of the country until April 4. For now, Karachi is expected to have partly cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle. No further heavy rain is expected in the city.
Despite bringing cooler weather, the heavy Rain has also caused serious damage. At least seven people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents over the past two days. In Gulistan-e-Jauhar, one person died after being electrocuted during the rain. Similar incidents were reported in Surjani Town, PIB Colony, and near MA Jinnah Road.
In Old Golimar, a wall collapsed onto a rickshaw, killing the driver. Another wall collapse in Orangi Town injured three children. Rescue teams responded quickly and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital.
The heavy rainfall also disrupted daily life in many areas. Several low-lying locations were flooded, including Safoora Chowrangi and Hassan Square. Water remained on roads for hours, causing long traffic jams and delays.
Electricity supply was also affected. Many feeders tripped during the rain, leaving several neighborhoods without power. Commuters faced difficulties as major roads were blocked due to accumulated water.
Rainfall data showed that Nazimabad received the highest amount of rain, reaching 97.4 millimetres. Other areas like Surjani Town, Keamari, DHA, Orangi Town, and Jinnah Terminal also recorded significant rainfall.
The rain system also affected other parts of Sindh. Cities such as Mohenjo-Daro, Jacobabad, Dadu, and Hyderabad reported moderate to heavy rainfall.
