The Punjab government has fully digitized its public transport route permit system. The system is now integrated with the insurance repository of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.
Under the new framework, all public transport vehicles must hold third-party motor insurance. Authorities have linked route permit issuance and renewals directly to valid insurance coverage. Transport operators must now provide proof of insurance before obtaining or renewing permits.
Officials said the digitized system strengthens passenger safety and ensures financial protection for all involved in accidents. Dr. Kabir Sidhu stated that third-party insurance guarantees timely compensation for passengers, drivers, and affected individuals.
Currently, the insurance repository contains data for roughly one million vehicles. Despite this, overall insurance coverage remains limited compared to the total number of vehicles in Punjab. Authorities are taking steps to expand coverage nationwide.
Legal reforms have also been proposed to make third-party insurance enforcement more effective. The plan includes a “no-fault” compensation model. Under this system, accident victims will receive timely compensation regardless of who caused the crash.
The integration of transport permits with insurance verification will improve efficiency, reduce administrative delays, and enhance public service delivery. Officials said the digital system allows real-time monitoring of transport vehicles’ insurance status across the province.
This move marks a significant step in modernizing Punjab’s transport sector. Authorities believe that linking permits to insurance will encourage compliance and improve safety standards. The government has also emphasized public awareness campaigns to inform transport operators of the new requirements.
