The Punjab government has announced plans to introduce a Smart Rapid Transport (SRT) system in Lahore along the Yellow Line route. The initiative aims to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a modern public transport option for residents.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has tasked Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan with making the project operational as quickly as possible. Authorities are working to ensure smooth execution and timely completion.
Bilal Akbar Khan stated that the SRT system will operate along Canal Road, covering the stretch from Thokar Chowk to Harbanspura, approximately 26 kilometers. The plan includes the construction of eight stations along the route, allowing easy access for passengers.
The system will use six rail units and is expected to serve over 12,000 passengers daily, providing fast and efficient travel for daily commuters in Lahore.
The estimated cost of the SRT project ranges from Rs. 6 billion to Rs. 8 billion. The route aligns with the existing Yellow Line, and the government has emphasized that the SRT will integrate seamlessly with current public transport infrastructure.
Officials confirmed that the tender process for the project has already begun. The Punjab government has set an ambitious target to make the system operational within one month, highlighting its commitment to enhancing urban transport.
Once completed, the SRT system is expected to significantly improve commuting times, reduce road traffic, and offer a sustainable and reliable transportation alternative. Punjab authorities aim to use this project as a model for future urban transport initiatives in other cities.
