NITB Seeks Rs. 208 Million for Islamabad’s Smart City Project

The National Information Technology Board (NITB) has requested Rs. 208 Million for the Smart Islamabad Initiative in the financial year 2026-27. The project has recorded 20 percent physical progress since its launch.

The total cost of the 24-month project is Rs. 708.384 Million, though no financial expenditure has yet been made. The Rs. 208 Million allocation is expected to support early implementation and critical project activities.

The initiative, executed under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, aims to enhance governance, public service delivery, and security in Islamabad. The project will integrate real-time data across government agencies for better city management.

A central Fusion Center will serve as the core of the initiative, linking institutions such as Safe City Islamabad, CDA, and EPA. This integration will enable smarter traffic control, city oversight, and faster response to public service requirements.

Officials said initial delays were caused by the late issuance of the No Objection Certificate (NOC). However, the procurement process has now advanced following the completion of Stage I of the Request for Proposal (RFP).

The Smart Islamabad Initiative, funded in part by Rs. 208 Million, is being positioned as a model for future smart city projects in Pakistan. Authorities plan to expand the framework to other urban centers after successful implementation in the capital.

The allocation of Rs. 208 Million will support project milestones, including infrastructure setup, system integration, and initial operations of the Fusion Center. Once operational, the initiative is expected to improve efficiency, security, and service delivery for Islamabad residents.
