Shehbaz Sharif has announced a series of relief measures to support lower and middle-income groups in Pakistan. The government is planning a targeted Subsidy program for motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers to reduce the impact of rising fuel prices.
The decision comes as global oil prices continue to rise due to tensions in the Middle East. Officials say the new Subsidy will help those who depend on daily travel for their income. Motorbike riders and rickshaw drivers are among the most affected groups.
During a high-level meeting, the government reviewed the impact of the energy situation. Authorities confirmed that a digital system is being developed to deliver the Subsidy directly to eligible individuals. This system aims to ensure transparency and quick distribution.
Officials also revealed that registration for motorbike and rickshaw owners will begin soon. The process will be carried out in coordination with provincial governments. Once registered, eligible citizens will receive financial support under the fuel Subsidy scheme.
The prime minister emphasized that the government will not leave vulnerable groups without support. He said the goal is to protect people from rising costs while maintaining economic stability. The plan is part of a broader relief strategy.
At the same time, the government has introduced strict austerity measures. These include reducing development spending and limiting non-essential expenses. Around 60 percent of official vehicles will no longer be used to save fuel.
Funds saved through these measures will be redirected toward public relief programs. Instead of increasing fuel prices further, the government aims to provide direct financial assistance through the Subsidy system.
Officials also assured that there is no immediate shortage of fuel in the country. Current petroleum reserves are sufficient to meet both short-term and future needs. Authorities are closely monitoring supply levels to avoid disruptions.
In addition, the government has taken steps to manage fuel consumption across different sectors. Conservation strategies are being implemented to reduce unnecessary usage.
The announcement highlights the government’s focus on balancing economic challenges with public welfare. By introducing the Subsidy program, authorities aim to ease financial pressure on millions of citizens.
Experts believe that targeted relief measures can help stabilize daily expenses for affected groups. However, they also stress the need for long-term energy planning to reduce dependence on imports.
