The majority of mobile users in Pakistan are not expected to need a new SIM card to use upcoming 5G services, provided they are already using a 4G-compatible SIM, according to industry projections ahead of the rollout.
Telecom specialists and service providers indicate that most existing 4G SIMs are designed to support 5G networks, meaning a compulsory SIM replacement will not be necessary for most subscribers. This is likely to make the shift to faster connectivity smoother and more convenient for users.
The expected compatibility is also seen as a cost-saving benefit, allowing consumers to access next-generation services without additional expenses. As Pakistan moves closer to introducing 5G, authorities are actively working on finalizing the spectrum auction and related policy framework to support the launch.
Officials aim for the rollout to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and contribute to overall economic development by enabling faster data speeds and improved connectivity.
Despite this, access to 5G will still depend on certain conditions. Users must have smartphones that support 5G technology, and initial coverage is expected to be limited to major urban centers during the early stages of deployment.
Experts also point out that while most people will be able to use their current SIM cards, individuals with older or outdated SIMs may still need to upgrade in order to fully utilize 5G services once they become available.
