Two students have created a mobile application aimed at helping passengers navigate Punjab’s electric bus service more efficiently, providing accurate route and schedule information for commuters who often struggle to find timely updates. The initiative addresses a common problem faced by passengers, especially those unfamiliar with bus timings or experiencing delays.
One of the developers, Muhammad Ghayas, shared that the idea originated from a personal experience. He recalled waiting at a bus stop for nearly half an hour, only to discover that the last bus on his route had already departed. This prompted him and his colleague to develop a solution that could provide real-time updates and reliable information to passengers.
The application offers details on electric bus routes, stops, and departure timings, and it can send notifications in case of schedule or route changes. Ghayas emphasized that the app relies on publicly available data presented in a simple, user-friendly format. Additionally, it is designed to function without an internet connection, making it accessible to a broader range of commuters.
Currently, the app is not yet available on the Play Store and is being accessed via a website. Despite this, it gained significant attention on social media, particularly Instagram, where the app was viewed over 50,000 times within two days and downloaded by more than 500 users. The early traction highlights strong public interest in practical solutions for public transport challenges.
Co-developer Rizwan Ali noted that the project is still in its initial stages and does not yet include live bus tracking, a feature that would require coordination with relevant government authorities. The team has reportedly reached out to the Punjab Chief Minister, the Punjab Transport Authority, and the Punjab Information Technology Board to seek support for further development, including the addition of live tracking capabilities.
At present, the app covers routes in six to seven major cities, with requests coming from users in other areas to expand coverage. The developers hope the app will eventually serve as a comprehensive tool for all electric bus passengers across Punjab, improving convenience, reducing wait times, and encouraging wider use of public transport.
