Iran Seeks FIFA Talks to Relocate World Cup Games from United States

Iran Football Federation has initiated discussions with FIFA regarding the possibility of relocating Iran’s opening-round matches in the upcoming World Cup from the United States to Mexico. The move is being considered due to security concerns linked to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, as highlighted by Iran’s embassy in Mexico.

The development has created uncertainty around Iran’s participation plans for the tournament, which is scheduled to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In remarks shared via social media, federation president Mehdi Taj stated that the national team may avoid traveling to the US if adequate safety guarantees are not provided. He confirmed that talks with FIFA are ongoing to explore the option of staging Iran’s matches in Mexico instead.

As per the current schedule, Iran is set to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle. The team’s base for the tournament has been listed as Tucson, Arizona. However, these plans could change depending on the outcome of the discussions.

Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, also raised concerns about visa issues and logistical challenges, criticizing what he described as limited cooperation from US authorities. He revealed that he had formally suggested to FIFA that Iran’s matches be moved to Mexico.

So far, FIFA has not issued an official response. The situation has drawn further attention after comments from Donald Trump, who said Iran’s team would be welcomed but also warned about potential safety risks. This appeared to contrast with earlier assurances from Gianni Infantino, who had indicated that there would be no issues for the Iranian team.

Iran has firmly rejected any suggestion that it could be excluded from the tournament. Meanwhile, rising tensions following military exchanges involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have added to the uncertainty surrounding the team’s participation and travel plans.
