Lionel Messi added another historic achievement to his legendary career despite Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. The Argentina captain set a new World Cup record while making his third appearance in football’s biggest match.
At 39 years and 25 days, Messi became the oldest outfield player ever to feature in a FIFA World Cup final. He broke the previous record held by Sweden’s Gunnar Gren, who was 37 years and 241 days old when he played in the 1958 World Cup final against Brazil.
The Inter Miami star also became only the second player in football history to appear in three FIFA World Cup finals. Messi reached the finals with Argentina in 2014, 2022, and 2026, equaling the achievement of Brazilian legend Cafu, who played in the 1994, 1998, and 2002 finals.
