A luxury vehicle valued at around Rs90 million has been procured for Yousaf Raza Gilani using funds allocated in the budget of the Senate of Pakistan.
According to officials, the car was purchased through the Senate’s approved budget and later delivered to the Senate Secretariat in Islamabad. Authorities said that the acquisition had already been sanctioned earlier under the institution’s spending plan. The payment for the vehicle was processed from the Senate’s allocated funds before the car was formally received by the Secretariat.
The purchase has drawn significant public attention and sparked debate across social media and political circles. Critics questioned the decision to acquire such a costly vehicle at a time when the country is facing serious economic challenges, including rising inflation and financial pressure on citizens. Many commentators argued that government officials should avoid expensive or luxury purchases while the public is dealing with economic hardship.
Several voices in the debate emphasized that state institutions should demonstrate financial restraint and prioritize responsible spending, especially during periods of economic instability. They suggested that symbolic steps such as reducing luxury expenditures could help restore public confidence.
Responding to the controversy, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani acknowledged that the vehicle had indeed been purchased through the Senate’s official budget. However, he clarified that the order for the car had been placed earlier and that he was not aware of the final delivery timeline at the time the procurement process was completed.
Gilani further stated that considering the current economic conditions in the country, he had recommended that the vehicle be returned. According to him, such a step would help avoid unnecessary luxury spending and demonstrate sensitivity toward the prevailing financial situation faced by the public.
