Pakistan has successfully completed its long-awaited 5G Spectrum Auction, a major step toward launching next-generation internet services in the country. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed that 480 MHz of spectrum was auctioned to telecom operators after three competitive rounds of bidding.
Telecom operators Jazz, Ufone, and Zong secured the spectrum. Jazz acquired 190 MHz, Ufone secured 180 MHz, and Zong obtained 110 MHz. The total auction raised $507 million, making it one of Pakistan’s largest telecom auctions in history. PTA Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman described the process as a milestone for Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.
The spectrum was distributed across multiple frequency bands. The 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz bands were included, with the 2600 MHz band seeing the highest demand. Bidding for this band involved 30 bids for 19 lots, pushing the price per lot from $12.5 million to $13.7 million. PTA officials noted that the auction was transparent, competitive, and inclusive, reflecting strong industry participation.
Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja called the 5G Spectrum Auction a historic moment for Pakistan’s technology sector. She said the auction will significantly expand Pakistan’s digital highway, enabling faster, more reliable internet. The government plans to roll out 5G services by the end of the year in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb added that the 5G rollout will support Pakistan’s Digital Pakistan vision. It will enhance sectors like agriculture, health, education, defense, and e-commerce. Millions of current 3G and 4G users will benefit from improved speeds and connectivity.
PTA emphasized that the next phase depends on telecom operators efficiently deploying the spectrum. Jazz has already prepared 180 sites for 5G deployment. The auction marks a key step in Pakistan’s journey toward a connected digital economy, supporting emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and online education.
