The suspension of CNG supply in Sindh and Balochistan by the Sui Southern Gas Company has created serious difficulties for commuters, forcing many people to search for alternative transport options. The move is expected to increase financial pressure on citizens who are already struggling with rising fuel prices and overall inflation.
Pakistan’s growing gas shortage has worsened during the holy month of Ramadan, creating additional challenges for consumers who depend on CNG as a cheaper fuel option. In response to the crisis, authorities in Karachi halted gas supply to the CNG sector for an indefinite period. As a result, CNG stations throughout Sindh and Balochistan have been closed until further notice.
The decision was announced by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) as part of a temporary gas management strategy. The company explained that the step was necessary to ensure that households receive uninterrupted gas supply during Ramadan. Officials said priority is being given to domestic consumers and commercial kitchens, especially during Sehr and Iftar when gas demand rises significantly as families prepare meals before and after fasting.
Despite this measure, the gas shortage continues to affect many residents. In Karachi, people are still facing scheduled gas cuts from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day. These interruptions have made it difficult for households and small businesses to carry out normal activities, increasing frustration among citizens during the holy month.
The decision has also faced criticism from the All Pakistan Petroleum and CNG Association. The association says shutting down CNG stations will create more problems for the public, particularly at a time when people are already dealing with high living costs. It pointed out that the recent Rs55 increase in petrol and diesel prices has already placed heavy financial pressure on consumers.
Industry representatives believe that stopping CNG supply, which is considered one of the more affordable fuel options, could increase transportation costs. They warn that higher transport fares and business expenses may follow, further adding to inflation and making life more difficult for ordinary citizens across the country.
