Pakistan’s men’s hockey team secured a thrilling 4–3 victory over Japan to qualify for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup during the semi-final of the qualifiers in Ismailia, Egypt.
Pakistan started the match strongly and took an early 1–0 lead, putting immediate pressure on the Japanese side. However, Japan responded quickly and turned the game around by scoring three goals to establish a commanding 3–1 advantage.
Facing elimination, the Men in Green showed remarkable determination in the closing stages of the match. Pakistan’s forwards launched a powerful comeback, first reducing the deficit and then equalizing to level the score at 3–3.
The dramatic turnaround continued as Pakistan scored the decisive fourth goal late in the game. The winning strike sealed a memorable comeback victory and ensured Pakistan’s place in the final of the qualifying tournament.
Pakistan’s goals were scored by Imad Muhammad, Abubakar Mahmood, Sufyan Khan, and Afraz. Goalkeeper Ali Raza also played a crucial role in the closing minutes by saving a penalty stroke, helping the team maintain its narrow lead.
The victory confirmed Pakistan’s qualification for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, which will be held in Belgium and the Netherlands. The achievement ends an eight-year wait for Pakistan’s return to the global tournament after last appearing in the 2018 edition.
