The United States government has issued a new advisory for its citizens residing in Pakistan, urging them to limit travel and remain cautious on Friday, March 6, due to the possibility of protests taking place across different parts of the country.
In an advisory released by the US Embassy, American nationals were advised to stay updated with local developments and maintain strict personal security precautions. The embassy encouraged citizens to stay alert, remain aware of their surroundings, and avoid crowded public places where demonstrations or gatherings could occur.
“We advise U.S. citizens in Pakistan to continue monitoring local news, practice strong personal security measures, remain aware of their surroundings, avoid large crowds, and ensure their enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is up to date,” the advisory stated.
The embassy also announced that the Consular Section would remain closed for routine public services on March 6. However, staff members will still be available to provide emergency consular assistance to US citizens if required.
American nationals were further urged to stay away from areas where large public gatherings or protests may occur and to regularly check their email and local news outlets for updates regarding appointments or embassy-related services. The advisory also recommended that US citizens maintain a low profile during this period.
Earlier in the week, the US State Department directed non-essential government personnel and their family members to depart from its consulates in Lahore and Karachi due to increasing security concerns. Despite this measure, the US Embassy in Islamabad continues to operate normally without any changes to its status.
According to the State Department, the decision follows rising security risks connected to the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. Since the conflict escalated on February 28, concerns have grown over potential drone or missile attacks from Iran, while disruptions in commercial flight operations have added to the uncertainty.
The advisory also highlighted the persistent threat of terrorism in Pakistan. Militant groups have carried out multiple attacks in regions such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Major urban centers, including Karachi and Islamabad, have also faced security incidents in the past.
Authorities warned that such attacks can occur unexpectedly, often targeting transportation hubs, hotels, markets, and government facilities.
Additionally, US citizens were cautioned about the risks of participating in protests or demonstrations. Pakistani law requires permits for public gatherings, and involvement in protests or posting critical comments about the government on social media could result in detention by security forces. During periods of unrest, internet and mobile phone services may also face temporary disruptions.
