Artificial intelligence-based vehicles are set to be introduced for driving licence tests in Lahore as part of efforts to enhance transparency, eliminate bias, and reduce corruption in the testing process. Authorities believe the new system will modernize driver assessments and ensure fair evaluations through automated technology instead of manual supervision.
A total of 44 AI-powered vehicles have been purchased for this purpose and are expected to arrive at the traffic headquarters next week. Although the initial plan included a smaller number of vehicles, officials later increased the count to 44 to meet operational requirements. Each vehicle has been purchased at an estimated cost of around Rs. 4.8 million, while additional equipment installation will require approximately Rs. 400,000 to Rs. 500,000 per vehicle. Final technical testing of these vehicles has already been completed at the traffic headquarters to ensure proper functionality before deployment.
The vehicles will be equipped with advanced sensors, surveillance cameras, and biometric verification machines to automate the driving test process. Instead of traditional manual testing tracks, the exams will now be conducted on GPS-based tracks monitored through digital systems. This upgrade is designed to minimize direct human intervention and reduce the possibility of favoritism or irregularities during licence testing.
Authorities plan to introduce the AI-based vehicles to different driving testing centers across Lahore in phases. Officials expect that the new system will improve efficiency, ensure accurate assessment of driving skills, and bring greater transparency to licence issuance. The initiative marks a significant step toward digital transformation in traffic management and public service operations in the city.
