An MPhil scholar has approached the Court after she was denied a gold medal by Sindh Agriculture University in Tandojam. The matter is now under review before the Sindh High Court.
On Tuesday, the Hyderabad Circuit Bench of the Court issued an interim order. The Court restrained the university from awarding gold medals to students of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences. The restriction will remain until the next hearing.
The petitioner, Tamseel Saleem Arain, filed the case through her counsel, Muhammad Soulat Rizvi. She told the Court that she was unfairly excluded from the medal list. The university reportedly claimed she delayed completing her MPhil degree.
Arain argued that MPhil students are allowed up to four years to finish the program. She said she completed her degree within the allowed time. According to her petition, the delay occurred due to legal issues beyond her control.
She informed the Court that she was arrested in a murder case registered on April 15, 2022, in Tando Allahyar. She remained in judicial custody until July 11, 2023. A trial court later acquitted her of all charges. She stated that the case resulted from a family dispute.
After her release, she appeared in the written examination. The results were announced on December 21, 2023. She passed the exam and secured the highest marks in her department.
However, during a meeting held on January 28, 2025, the university’s academic council shortlisted three other candidates for gold medals. Arain’s name was excluded. She claimed those candidates had lower marks than her.
According to the petition, Arain obtained 425 marks with 88.46 percent and a CGPA of 3.96. The shortlisted students secured 424, 415, and 381 marks.
She requested a review of the decision but received no response. A personal hearing was held on April 10, 2025. She said the outcome was not shared with her.
The Court has now issued notices to the Sindh government, university officials, and the Higher Education Commission. The Court has sought their replies before the next hearing.
