The government of Pakistan has launched the Prime Minister’s Electric Bike Initiative 2026, a nationwide program aimed at promoting eco-friendly transport and easing fuel expenses for citizens. Officials say the scheme is part of a broader strategy to modernize mobility, reduce urban pollution levels, and support low-income commuters struggling with rising petrol costs.
Authorities confirmed that thousands of electric bikes will be distributed during the first phase, with priority given to students, workers, and delivery riders. The initiative also includes a limited number of electric rickshaws, reflecting the administration’s push to expand clean public transport options while reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the program demonstrates the government’s commitment to sustainable development and economic relief. He noted that affordable electric mobility could transform daily travel for millions, especially in major cities where transportation costs consume a large portion of household income.
Officials stated that subsidies will significantly lower purchase prices, making electric bikes more accessible than conventional motorcycles. In addition, easy installment plans and simplified application procedures are designed to ensure transparency and encourage participation among young riders, women applicants, and small business workers nationwide.
Energy analysts believe the initiative could help cut fuel imports and reduce environmental damage if implemented effectively.
