Electricity Prices are expected to rise across Pakistan under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to increase power tariffs by Rs. 1.78 per unit.
If approved, the adjustment will apply to all consumers nationwide, including K-Electric users in Karachi. NEPRA is scheduled to hold a hearing on the petition on February 26.
Currently, the December 2025 monthly adjustment is in effect, which raised Electricity Prices by 28 paisas per unit across the country, including Karachi. The upcoming adjustment for January 2026 will replace this previous increase.
The fuel cost adjustment mechanism links Electricity Prices to fluctuations in fuel costs. This ensures that tariffs reflect the actual cost of electricity generation. However, frequent increases can impact household budgets, commercial expenses, and industrial operations.
According to CPPA, rising fuel expenses are the main reason for the proposed increase. Energy experts warn that this adjustment could be the largest monthly increase since late 2025 if NEPRA approves the request.
Consumers are advised to stay updated on NEPRA announcements and prepare for potential changes in their electricity bills. The February 26 hearing will consider objections, technical evaluations, and consumer feedback before a final decision is issued.
Once NEPRA approves the adjustment, the new tariffs will take effect immediately and replace the December 2025 increase. Officials emphasize that the fuel cost adjustment mechanism ensures that electricity bills remain aligned with actual production costs while maintaining transparency in pricing.
