“Ring of Fire” Solar Eclipse to Occur in 2026

The first solar eclipse of 2026 will be an annular eclipse, popularly known as the “Ring of Fire,” where the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but does not cover it completely. This creates a spectacular visual effect with the Sun appearing as a bright, reddish ring surrounding the dark silhouette of the Moon.

During this event, the central part of the Sun will be obscured while the outer edges remain visible, forming the signature ring shape. Astronomers have confirmed that the complete eclipse will only be visible from Antarctica, while it will not be observable in Pakistan. Residents in Pakistan and much of the northern hemisphere will miss the full effect, though partial visibility may be reported in some distant regions.

According to timings in Pakistan Standard Time, the eclipse will begin at 2:56 PM, reach its maximum at 5:12 PM, and conclude by 7:28 PM. During this period, the Sun’s apparent size is slightly larger than the Moon, preventing a total blockage and resulting in the ring of fire effect that makes annular eclipses unique.

Experts strongly caution against observing the Sun without proper protection, as direct viewing can cause permanent eye damage. Special solar eclipse glasses or indirect viewing methods such as pinhole projectors are recommended for safe observation. Regular sunglasses or homemade filters are not considered safe.

This astronomical event provides a chance for enthusiasts worldwide to study and photograph the eclipse safely. While Pakistan will not witness the full annular eclipse, awareness and preparation for solar viewing safety remain essential for those following the phenomenon globally.
