Electricity prices in Pakistan are likely to increase by Rs0.48 per unit for one month under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism. The proposed hike may further burden consumers already struggling with high electricity bills and rising living costs.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency has submitted a formal request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority seeking approval for a tariff increase for December. NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a public hearing on the CPPA petition before making a final determination.
According to the petition, a total of 8.487 billion units of electricity were generated across the country during December. Out of this, around 8.208 billion units were supplied to power distribution companies for onward delivery to consumers nationwide.
The CPPA stated that the average cost of electricity generation during December stood at Rs9.62 per unit. The figures reflect the impact of fuel costs, capacity charges, and the changing energy mix used to meet demand.
In terms of generation sources, hydel power contributed 18.07 percent of total electricity production during the month. Local coal accounted for 13.99 percent, while imported coal added another 10.13 percent to the overall energy supply.
Electricity generated from natural gas stood at 11.20 percent, while imported LNG contributed 17.24 percent. Nuclear power remained the largest source, accounting for 25.05 percent of total electricity generation in December.
