Several historic monuments at Lahore Fort have been officially inaugurated after extensive conservation. The restoration marks a major step in preserving the city’s shared and diverse heritage.
The restored sites include the Sikh-era Hammam, Athdara Pavilion, and Loh Temple. Conservation work was also carried out on other structures within the Fort complex. The project received funding from the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.
The restoration was implemented by the Aga Khan Cultural Service – Pakistan. The work was carried out in collaboration with the Walled City of Lahore Authority. Both organisations focused on protecting original materials and historic details.

The inauguration is part of a broader initiative titled Preservation and Promotion of Cross-Cultural Edifices of Lahore Fort. The programme aims to protect monuments linked to Mughal, Sikh, Hindu, and British periods. Earlier restorations under this initiative included the Sikh-era Temple and the Imperial Zenana Mosque.
With the latest work completed, a total of seven monuments inside Lahore Fort have now been conserved. These efforts highlight the Fort’s importance as a site representing multiple eras of history.

Each restored monument holds unique historical value. The Loh Temple complex is located near the Alamgiri Gate. It includes interconnected chambers used for Hindu rituals. The site also features architectural elements added during the Sikh period.
The Athdara Pavilion is situated in the northwest section of the Shah Jahan Forecourt Quadrangle. It was built during the Sikh era and served as a public court. Historical records suggest Maharaja Ranjit Singh held court at this location.
The Sikh Hammam is located near the Sheesh Mahal Quadrangle. It was originally constructed during Emperor Shah Jahan’s reign. Later, it was adapted into a hammam during the Sikh period. The site features delicate oil paintings.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Shah Burj Forecourt of Lahore Fort. Punjab Minister for Minorities Affairs Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora attended as the chief guest. Sandeep Paul from the US Consulate Lahore was present as the guest of honour.
Officials from government, academia, and the arts community attended the event. AKCS-P CEO Tausif Khawaja delivered the opening remarks. He was followed by speeches from Sandeep Paul and WCLA Director General Najamus Saqib.
