The upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has come under serious scrutiny after a deadly Nipah virus outbreak was reported in India, raising concerns just weeks before the mega cricket event is scheduled to begin. The tournament is set to start on February 7, with India hosting teams, officials, and fans from around the world.
According to reports, health authorities in West Bengal have quarantined nearly 100 people after confirming five Nipah virus cases. The infected individuals reportedly include healthcare workers, with at least two nurses and a doctor testing positive. Media reports claim that two nurses working in Kolkata are currently in critical condition, prompting heightened alarm among health officials.
The timing of the outbreak has intensified concerns, as large-scale international travel and mass gatherings are central to World Cup preparations. Any further spread of the virus could severely impact logistics, safety protocols, and match scheduling across host cities.
In response, Indian authorities have tightened contact tracing and quarantine measures while investigating possible hospital-acquired transmission. The federal government has also deployed a central response team to assist local officials and closely monitor the evolving health situation.
Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease commonly linked to bats and is considered extremely dangerous due to its high fatality rate, which has reached up to 75 percent in past outbreaks. The incubation period typically ranges from five to fourteen days. Early symptoms include fever and headaches, which can rapidly progress to severe neurological complications such as encephalitis, seizures, and coma. There is currently no approved vaccine, and treatment remains largely supportive.
The tournament is already facing controversy following reports that the ICC removed Bangladesh from the competition after it requested to play its matches in Sri Lanka due to security concerns. The ICC reportedly declined the request and replaced Bangladesh with Scotland, drawing criticism from fans and analysts online.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is also said to be reconsidering its participation in the event, citing alleged double standards in the ICC’s treatment of India and the BCCI. No official announcement has yet been made by Pakistan regarding its final decision.
