Murree Records its Heaviest Snowfall in Two Decades

Murree is facing an intense snowstorm that has resulted in the heaviest snowfall recorded in the hill town in the past two decades. Snow depth in several areas has reportedly reached nearly five feet, bringing daily life to a standstill and severely affecting movement across the region.

The extreme weather has left thousands of vehicles stranded throughout Murree, prompting authorities to launch a large-scale rescue and clearance operation. Officials said efforts are underway to safely evacuate nearly 5,000 vehicles stuck at various points. Police, rescue teams, and traffic personnel have been deployed across key locations, while heavy machinery is being used to remove snow and clear blocked roads.

To reduce the risk of accidents, salt is being spread on major routes to prevent skidding. Authorities stated that roads are being reopened gradually, depending on snowfall intensity, road conditions, and visibility levels.

Given the volatile situation, a complete ban has been imposed on tourist entry into Murree. Officials warned that traffic congestion, icy roads, and poor visibility could quickly create life-threatening conditions. Tourists currently in Murree and wishing to leave are being assisted as soon as routes are declared safe for travel.

Earlier advisories and precautionary measures helped limit the number of visitors entering the area. Estimates suggest that at peak times, around 10,000 tourists were present in and around the Murree GPO and nearby localities.

The heavy snowfall has also disrupted essential services. Several peripheral areas have reportedly been without electricity since last night, while internet connectivity has been partially suspended. Residents in multiple neighborhoods have expressed concern as restricted movement and service outages have made routine life increasingly difficult.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, snowfall is expected to continue through the night, raising concerns about further delays in road clearance and restoration of basic services.

Authorities have once again urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel to Murree, emphasizing that while teams are working around the clock, conditions will remain uncertain until the snow spell subsides.
