Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has demanded a judicial inquiry into the Gul Plaza fire in Karachi. The death toll has risen to 67, with 77 people still missing.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the Sindh governor said he would write to the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and Sindh High Court to conduct the inquiry.
“Those responsible must be identified and punished without delay,” the Sindh governor said.
Rescue teams continue searching for survivors from the inferno that broke out last Saturday night. Investigators say the fire started in a shop selling artificial flowers. Children were reportedly playing inside when the fire began.
The Sindh governor criticized the local administration, saying officials were absent when needed the most. Water tankers reportedly got stuck in traffic near Guru Mandir during rescue efforts.
“The administration is responsible. Citizens pay taxes and expect proper management. Such incidents will continue until accountability is ensured,” the governor added.
Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso confirmed that 67 bodies have been recovered. The search and rescue operation is in its final stage and expected to conclude today. Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Syed said post-mortem examinations are complete for 67 bodies. Six bodies were identified on recovery, eight through DNA testing, one via a national ID card, and another by a locket. Identification continues for the remaining victims.
Senior Fire Officer Zafar Khan said a fire reignited in the building’s basement during operations but was quickly extinguished. A diesel tank on the roof contributed to the hazard. He added that the building structure has weakened, and many remains are now recovered as bones.
Preliminary investigations rule out a short circuit. Sources said the blaze originated in the shop where children were present. The fire spread quickly to stored items and nearby wiring.
Closed doors, grills on rooftop exits, and a damaged CCTV system hindered evacuation. Eyewitness statements are being recorded as part of the ongoing probe. Families continue providing DNA samples to locate missing relatives.
The Sindh governor emphasized the need for swift action and accountability to prevent such tragedies in the future.
