Gul Plaza Karachi Fire

KARACHI – Firefighters have successfully brought a massive blaze at the iconic Gul Plaza shopping centre under control after a grueling 36-hour operation. However, the tragedy has left at least 14 people dead and dozens more missing, as authorities warn the structural integrity of the building is severely compromised.

Rescue Operations and Casualties

The Gul Plaza Karachi fire, which erupted late Saturday night, continued to rage through Sunday. By Monday morning, rescue teams confirmed the recovery of 14 bodies, including a brave firefighter who died in the line of duty.

Search efforts are still underway, though officials are proceeding with extreme caution. Large sections of the multi-storey building have already collapsed. Chief Fire Officer Humayun Ahmed stated that the building is now extremely unstable and could fall at any moment.

“The central fire is out, but the risk of collapse is very high,” Ahmed explained. Because of this, firefighters have shifted their focus to removing debris rather than entering deeper into the structure.

Dozens Still Missing

The human toll remains uncertain as families continue to search for loved ones. Police have used mobile phone data to track approximately 59 missing persons. So far, at least 26 locations have been traced near the plaza, but many remain unaccounted for.

Over 30 people were injured during the incident. Many victims suffered from smoke inhalation and severe burns. They are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals, including Jinnah Hospital and the Civil Hospital Trauma Centre.

Economic Devastation and Investigation

Gul Plaza is one of Karachi’s busiest commercial hubs, housing over 1,200 shops. The fire has resulted in billions of rupees in losses for local traders. Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been caused by a short circuit in a shop containing flammable materials.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah visited the site and promised transparency in the investigation. He has also ordered an immediate fire safety audit of all commercial buildings in Karachi to prevent future disasters.

Calls for Accountability

The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has demanded a judicial inquiry into the Gul Plaza Karachi fire. Business leaders are questioning the lack of modern firefighting equipment and emergency exits in such a major market. They are also calling for a dedicated rehabilitation fund to help the affected shopkeepers recover their livelihoods.

As the cooling process continues, the shopping centre remains sealed off. Rescue teams will only enter once the structure is deemed safe enough to search for those still trapped under the rubble.
