Pakistan Customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of marijuana into the country through the International Mail Office in Karachi, officials said. The seizure was made by the Federal Board of Revenue Customs at the Air Cargo Control Unit of the Collectorate of Customs Airports Karachi during routine profiling and examination of incoming mail consignments.
According to customs authorities, the intercepted parcel originated from the United States and was falsely declared as containing books. Upon closer inspection, officials discovered that the package concealed approximately 1.03 kilograms of marijuana, highlighting a deliberate attempt to evade detection by exploiting international postal services.
Customs officials said the seized marijuana has an estimated market value of Rs. 30.716 million. The contraband was immediately confiscated under relevant provisions of customs and anti-narcotics laws, while further action was initiated against unknown persons involved in the attempted smuggling operation.
Authorities noted that international mail services are increasingly being misused by smugglers to transport narcotics and other illegal items, assuming lower scrutiny compared to traditional cargo channels. The successful interception, officials said, reflects improved profiling mechanisms and enhanced vigilance at mail processing facilities.
Legal proceedings have been initiated under applicable laws, and investigations are underway to trace the sender, intended recipient, and any local or international networks linked to the parcel. Customs officials said coordination with relevant law enforcement agencies will continue to dismantle such smuggling routes.
The Federal Board of Revenue reiterated its commitment to combating smuggling, corruption, and illicit trade through all possible channels. Officials stressed that such enforcement actions are vital to protect public safety, preserve national revenue, and prevent the circulation of illegal drugs within the country.
