The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released a weather alert warning of extremely cold conditions expected to persist until January 16. The advisory highlights the possibility of harsh winter conditions across several parts of the province, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures to minimize risks to public safety.
According to information shared on Sunday, the PDMA has formally issued notifications to multiple government departments, including tourism, education, health, agriculture, local government, forestry, and other relevant institutions. The authority has cautioned that several regions may experience intense cold spells accompanied by snowfall, particularly in Rawalpindi, Murree, the Galiyat, and the Potohar belt. In addition to low temperatures, an increase in fog and smog levels is also anticipated, which could disrupt daily activities and transportation.
Director General PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, emphasized the importance of preparedness in light of the weather alert. He urged educational institutions to provide clear guidance to students regarding the use of proper winter clothing to protect against severe cold. He also stressed that classrooms should be adequately equipped with heating arrangements or other necessary measures to ensure a safe and comfortable learning environment during the cold spell.
Furthermore, the PDMA chief directed all hospitals and healthcare facilities to remain fully prepared. He instructed medical centres to ensure the availability of essential medicines, heating arrangements, and adequate medical staff to handle any cold-related emergencies. Special attention has been advised for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with existing health conditions.
