A female student at a private university in Lahore has regained consciousness after a suicide attempt, hospital officials confirmed on Thursday. The student, Fatima, jumped from the second floor of the campus building and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Lahore General Hospital.
Authorities said Fatima has been removed from the ventilator and is now stable. She remains on oxygen support and is responsive. A hospital spokesperson stated, “The patient has regained consciousness, and her condition has improved significantly.”
Fatima has also communicated with her family. “She is responding well to treatment and is under constant observation,” officials added. Doctors are monitoring her condition and will determine if spinal surgery is necessary.
Punjab Women Protection Authority Chairperson Hina Pervaiz Butt visited the hospital and met with Fatima and her family. She confirmed that officials are examining claims of pressure ‘over marriage’ and other personal and educational matters.
“All aspects of the incident will be reviewed, including the student’s family disputes and potential pressures over marriage,” Butt said. Authorities are also examining mobile phone records and call history to verify the sequence of events leading to the attempt.
Police revealed that Fatima, a resident of Narang Mandi, wanted to marry a young man named Ahmed. However, her family opposed marriage, insisting she continued her studies. Sources said the opposition caused distress, contributing to the suicide attempt.
Butt emphasized that saving the student’s life is the top priority. She instructed hospital authorities to ensure strict monitoring at every stage of her treatment.
The hospital has restructured the medical board overseeing Fatima’s care, expanding it from four to seven senior doctors. The team includes Dr. Khurram Saleem, Dr. Javed Magsi, and Dr. Saira Zeeshan. The private university has also formed an eight-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident and assess all contributing factors. Authorities continue to monitor Fatima’s condition closely. Investigations are ongoing into the possible role of pressure ‘over marriage’ and other familial or educational factors. Officials have pledged transparency and adherence to the law throughout the inquiry.
