Self-Determination Day

Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world are observing Self-Determination Day today. The day marks their continued commitment to the UN-recognized right to determine their future.

Self-Determination Day traces back to January 5, 1949, when the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution supporting a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution affirmed the right of Kashmiris to choose their political future.

For over 76 years, Kashmiris have marked this day to draw global attention to the unresolved dispute. Organizers say the denial of this right remains a serious challenge to international law and the conscience of the world.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, extensive arrangements are in place for Self-Determination Day observances. Public rallies, processions, seminars, and symposiums are scheduled in all ten-district headquarters. These events aim to highlight the importance of the right to self-determination and to reinforce that this internationally acknowledged right remains unfulfilled.

This year’s observance is particularly significant considering India’s revocation of Articles 370 and 35-A on August 5, 2019. Kashmiri leaders describe this action as a violation of international commitments. They say it has turned Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir into one of the most heavily controlled regions in the world.

Speakers at today’s events will emphasize that any resolution to the Kashmir issue must reflect the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. The gatherings aim to remind the global community of the ongoing importance of the UN resolutions and the long-standing plea of Kashmiris for self-determination.

Officials say that Self-Determination Day is not just a symbolic observance but a call for accountability. The day serves to renew focus on international obligations and encourage diplomatic efforts toward a just solution.

Kashmiris hope that today’s observances will generate international attention and pressure for meaningful action. They continue to stress that peace and stability in the region can only be achieved by respecting the wishes of the people directly affected.

Kashmiris continue to face hardships, highlighting ongoing struggles in the region. Read more about Lives Lost, Families Broken As Indian Forces Martyred 84 Kashmiris In 2025 for detailed coverage.

The day also underscores the role of education, public awareness, and media coverage in maintaining global focus on the Kashmir issue. Organizers hope that a collective effort will help amplify the voice of the Kashmiri population on the world stage.
