The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new class licensing framework to provide internet services at the district level. This initiative aims to strengthen broadband connectivity across the country.
PTA has opened online applications for the district-level internet service class license. The framework is designed to make it easier for service providers to enter local markets and expand internet coverage.
According to the authority, the class license will be valid for 10 years, encouraging long-term investment in broadband infrastructure. Applicants must pay a one-time initial fee of Rs. 300,000 before the license becomes effective.
An annual license fee of Rs. 100,000 will apply for the first year. For subsequent years, the fee will increase by 10% annually and must be paid in advance. This ensures a predictable cost structure for license holders and encourages stable planning.
The PTA said the primary objective of the class license is to improve broadband services at the district level. Providing local internet services is expected to promote small business growth, improve digital access, and support economic development in underserved areas.
Officials believe the new licensing framework will motivate service providers to invest in infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and reach communities that previously had limited access to high-speed internet.
Experts note that district-level licenses will also increase competition in the telecom sector. This opens opportunities for smaller and local providers to serve customers more efficiently and at competitive rates.
The PTA’s initiative forms part of a broader strategy to modernize Pakistan’s telecommunications sector, ensure digital inclusion for citizens, and foster sustainable growth in information technology and broadband services.
