52 Lawmakers Retiring Causes Pakistan Senate Dysfunction

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]The upper house of parliament is rendered non-functional for a minimum of three weeks following the retirement of 52 lawmakers on Monday night. Among those concluding their tenures are Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, Deputy Chairman, Leader of the House Ishaq Dar, Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shahzad Waseem, and Senator Raza Rabbani.

Additionally, the terms of 11 PML-N senators, 13 from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), seven from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and two each from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), and National Party have also ended. Four senators supported by Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), along with one senator each from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), and Pakistan Muslim League-F (PML-F) have retired.

Notable senators among the retirees include Maula Bux Chandio, Dr. Farogh Naseem, Dr. Musadik Malik, Faisal Javed, and Azam Khan Swati. Post the general elections, six Senate seats are now vacant, with by-elections scheduled for March 14 to fill these positions.

Senators serve a 6-year term, with half of them retiring every three years, necessitating elections to address the resulting vacancies. Although these elections traditionally occur shortly before the senators’ terms expire, this did not happen on this occasion. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled polling to fill the 48 vacancies for April 2, and the election schedule is expected to be announced later this week according to the commission.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
