Microsoft has started testing a free, ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming for a limited group of users. The new trial allows eligible players to stream supported games they already own without needing a Game Pass subscription.
The test officially began on July 23. It is currently available only to members of the Xbox Insider programme who have an Xbox account. Microsoft has not announced when the feature will become available to all users.
Under the trial, participants can stream selected games from their existing digital libraries at no cost. However, each gaming session is limited to one hour.
Before gameplay starts, users will watch advertisements. According to Microsoft, the ads will appear only before the session begins. They will not interrupt gameplay once players start their games.
The company has not revealed how long the advertisements will be. It also has not confirmed whether daily or monthly usage limits will be introduced in future versions of the service.
Not every digital Xbox game is included in the test. Microsoft said only selected titles that support cloud streaming are eligible. The company has not shared a complete list of supported games.
Xbox Cloud Gaming works across several devices. Supported platforms include Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, smartphones, tablets, selected LG and Samsung smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and compatible Meta Quest headsets.
The service is also available through supported web browsers on Android phones, iPhones, iPads, and desktop computers. Most games require a compatible controller, although some titles also support touchscreen controls.
The trial may also benefit Xbox One owners. It could allow them to stream games designed for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S without buying newer hardware.
Microsoft said advertisements shown during the trial must meet the same quality standards as its gaming content. The company added that all ads should be clearly identified and should match the expectations of players on each platform.
The company plans to collect feedback from Xbox Insider members throughout the testing period. That feedback will help improve the service before any wider launch.
The trial comes as Microsoft looks for more affordable ways to attract new players. By removing the Game Pass requirement for selected users, the company hopes to lower the cost of accessing Xbox games.
The announcement also comes ahead of planned Xbox console price increases. Microsoft has confirmed that prices will rise worldwide from August 1. The company said higher storage and memory costs are among the reasons for the increase.
An ad-supported cloud gaming option could help more people access Xbox games without purchasing expensive hardware or subscriptions. It may also provide game developers with a larger audience.

For now, the service remains in testing. Microsoft has not confirmed a final launch date. It also has not announced the complete game catalogue, advertisement length, or whether the one-hour session limit will remain after the testing phase ends.
