Young Girl Allegedly Murdered on Jirga Orders in Kohistan

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]In Kohistan, a tragic incident has occurred where a young girl was reportedly murdered under the directives of a local jirga, as confirmed by a local police officer on Sunday. This event evokes distressing recollections of the 2011 deaths of approximately five girls from the same region.

The victim was one of two girls featured in a viral video on social media platforms, dancing with local boys, according to Masood Khan, the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Kolai-Palas, located about 150km northwest of Mansehra. The DSP mentioned that the victim’s body had been relocated to a nearby health facility for a post-mortem examination.

The DSP further explained that the second girl was rescued by the police due to perceived threats to her life. However, a senior civil judge, after ruling out any danger to her life, allowed her to return home with her father.

The boys from the videos are reportedly in hiding, fearing retaliation. The circulated videos and photos, seemingly edited, gained traction on social media platforms three to four days ago, as per DSP Khan.

In accordance with local tradition, the jirga labeled those appearing in the circulated images as ‘chor’ (thieves) and issued a decree for their execution, the police officer disclosed. An FIR has been filed, and the individuals responsible for issuing the death decree and those involved in its execution will be held accountable, stated the police official.

The FIR, documented by the Kolai-Palas police station SHO Noor Mohammad Khan, includes sections 109 (abetment in crime), 302 (punishment for premeditated murder), and 311 (punishment after the waiver of qisas) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The victim’s family did not initially approach the police, leading to the SHO filing the complaint.

The FIR outlines that medico-legal procedures, including the autopsy, were conducted by Kolai-Palas police. This incident mirrors a similar one from a decade ago in the same area, where a video of local girls cheering for a dancing boy in 2011 went viral. Allegedly, all five women in the video, along with the boy’s four brothers, were killed on the orders of a local jirga. The incident garnered international attention, prompting then-Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to take suo motu notice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
