Cricket supporters and citizens across Pakistan have been actively discussing on social media why the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to rename Gaddafi Stadium, one of the country’s most iconic cricket venues located in Lahore.
According to PCB officials, the proposed change is part of a broader plan aimed at strengthening domestic cricket and modernising stadium facilities. The board has formally decided to invite suggestions and sponsorship proposals from companies and the public, with submissions open until March 24.
The primary goal behind renaming Gaddafi Stadium is linked to commercial sponsorship and generating additional revenue. Under the plan, the PCB intends to sell the stadium’s naming rights to a corporate sponsor. Through this arrangement, the board could potentially earn around Rs1 billion over a five-year period.
This approach is widely used in international sports, where stadiums often carry the names of sponsoring companies. Such partnerships help generate funds that can be reinvested into improving sports infrastructure and enhancing the experience for spectators attending matches.
Officials say the revenue generated from the naming rights of Gaddafi Stadium will not only support facility upgrades but will also help finance domestic cricket tournaments and strengthen the operational needs of Pakistan’s national team. The PCB believes this financial model will help modernise the country’s cricket structure and keep it competitive on the global stage.
The board had previously explored a similar sponsorship deal in 2024 with a private bank, but negotiations did not result in a final agreement, leaving the stadium’s name unchanged at that time.
With the process now reopened, potential sponsors and stakeholders have another opportunity to participate in shaping the future of Gaddafi Stadium. If the proposal moves forward successfully, Lahore’s historic venue could soon enter a new era that combines its rich cricketing legacy with modern commercial partnerships in sports.
